Best Looks at the Met Gala 2024
The intersection between sports and fashion has never been greater. The Met Gala welcomed a host of sports starts to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City to showcase the best of modern fashion, with some spectacularly-designed garments by some of the world’s biggest designers each telling a story of their own. Modern artistry, craftsmanship and couture elegance intertwined to create a symphony of style on the famous Met steps, with some notable sports figures taking centre stage. The theme of the event? The “Garden of Time”. Here’s SWM’s pick of the best.
Lewis Hamilton
Mixing style and substance, Lewis wore a bespoke Burberry outfit inspired by the legacy of John Ystumllym – one of Britain’s first black gardeners – and the language of flowers in black history. His jacket was embroidered with periwinkles, yucca, daffodils and cedar branches.
Ben Simmons
In a Thom Browne-designed outfit, Simmons wore a suit with a tartan-patterned overcoat and carried a briefcase with a clock. The stylish look appeared to be part of Browne’s fall 2024 “nevermore” collection. The briefcase clock wasn’t the best timepiece Simmons donned though, a Patek Philippe Aquanaut with a gem-set rainbow bezel on his wrist added serious staying power for this look.
Serena Williams
This tennis superstar dazzled in a full gold Balenciaga-designed ensemble, reminiscent of her illustrious career. The atelier dedicated 150 hours to pattern-making and crafted the couture piece from 25 meters of gold foil-laminated taffeta sourced from Italy. In keeping with “The Garden of Time” dress code, she paired the gown with an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak watch.
Venus Williams
Following the metallic trend, Venus opted for a custom Marc Jacobs strapless gown with mirrored pailettes. Back in 2004 Venus Williams was the first athlete to attend the Met Gala, and now she is a regular fixture on the storied steps – for good reason too.
Angel Reese
American basketball player Angel Reese made her Met debut on her 22nd birthday in a beautiful mint-hued 16Arlington gown. Reese’s dress featured a plunging neckline with sequins throughout the top and a feathered miniskirt with a sheer layer underneath.
